PreZero’s takeover of RE.LION.BAT. sparks a battle for control of Europe’s EV battery future
6 Sep 2025

Europe’s electric vehicle revolution has just entered a high-stakes phase. Recycling giant PreZero has secured a major win by acquiring RE.LION.BAT. Circular, a cutting-edge facility in Meppen that is poised to become one of the continent’s largest EV battery recycling plants. The move is being seen as a strategic play to access essential raw materials for the coming wave of electric vehicles.
The timing couldn’t be more critical. With the EU's stringent recycling regulations set to tighten by 2025, automakers are urgently seeking reliable partners to manage end-of-life batteries and recover valuable materials like lithium, nickel, and cobalt. By purchasing a plant that’s in its early operational stages, PreZero has bypassed the typical delays of building from scratch and immediately gained the capacity to process thousands of tons of batteries annually.
This acquisition signals the beginning of a wave of consolidation within the battery recycling industry, as companies race to expand operations ahead of impending regulations. “Automakers need guarantees that materials will be returned to the market with the highest standards,” said a PreZero executive, emphasizing that credibility could make the company a top choice for major automotive brands eager to boost their sustainability credentials.
However, significant challenges remain. The logistics of transporting hazardous batteries across borders are complex, and without efficient networks, even the largest recycling plants could face operational bottlenecks. Competitors, like Fortum, are already investing heavily in transport infrastructure to ensure a steady supply. Some industry experts warn that the rapid consolidation could squeeze out smaller, innovative players.
Despite these challenges, the outlook is optimistic. PreZero’s acquisition of the Meppen plant highlights that battery recycling is maturing into a multi-billion-euro industry, increasingly central to Europe’s industrial strategy. If the plant meets expectations, it could trigger more acquisitions, bold investments, and a faster move toward a circular, closed-loop supply chain for critical materials.
As Europe pushes to reduce its reliance on imported raw materials, deals like PreZero’s show that momentum is building rapidly. The competition to control the future of Europe’s EV battery supply chain is now officially underway.
