AI-powered robots from Swiss innovators speed up EV battery disassembly, slashing risks and setting a new European standard for green tech
13 Oct 2025

Europe is fast-tracking the future of EV battery recycling, and robots are in the driver’s seat. As the continent faces a tidal wave of aging electric vehicle batteries, three pioneering firms are unleashing a high-tech solution: AI-powered robots that dismantle used battery packs with unmatched speed and safety.
The LAMBDA project, a collaboration between the Swiss Battery Technology Center, robotics developer AICA, and recycler Circu Li-ion, is redefining what’s possible in battery recovery. These intelligent machines are trained on thousands of battery designs, enabling them to deftly unscrew, lift, and sort complex components with no downtime and no risk of exposure to hazardous materials.
The result is dramatic. Disassembly times are slashed by up to 50 percent, easing pressure on labor forces and significantly boosting recycling throughput. It’s a timely breakthrough as Europe tightens regulations on battery reuse and ramps up its push for strategic materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel.
Unlike traditional methods, which rely on manual labor and expose workers to toxic substances and high voltages, these robotic systems bring precision and reliability to an industry facing rising demand and shrinking margins. By integrating AI with robotics, the LAMBDA project points to a scalable and flexible path forward.
Challenges persist. Setting up robotic disassembly lines is capital-intensive, and the lack of standardized battery designs makes automation more complex. Gaining access to detailed battery schematics from automakers remains a sticking point. Yet the trajectory is clear: automated systems are becoming indispensable to sustainable EV infrastructure.
This is more than just a technological advance. It is a strategic pivot in how Europe addresses EV waste. Through bold innovation and smart investment, the region is setting a global benchmark for responsible energy solutions. As AI continues to evolve, its role in closing the loop on battery lifecycles will only grow stronger.
